Research Library: The Data Catalog

Every original dataset this site publishes, in one catalog. This is the research side of Gluten Free Brewer: primary data from two decades of commercial gluten-free brewing and the programs that supported it — published in full, downloadable, and citable, because the published North American record of this work is close to empty and whoever does it next shouldn't start from zero.

The brewing knowledge base explains how to brew; this library holds the records underneath it. Every dataset here follows the same rules: tables generated from the original documents (never hand-transcribed), a full-precision CSV download, a ready-to-paste citation, and reuse-with-attribution. Where a narrative page interprets a dataset, the two link both ways.

The catalog

DatasetWhat it isMeasuresDownload
USDA Madison Screening25 named sorghum cultivars micro-malted at the USDA-ARS Cereal Crops Research Unit, two germination lengthsExtract, DP, α-amylase, FAN, protein, S/T, wort clarity and colorCSV
2002–2004 Screenings74 rows (≈54 unique samples; the 2004 sheet re-lists 20 earlier entries) from the same program's earlier rounds — Texas and SorTech breeding lines, early hybrid candidates, across Missouri/Kansas/NebraskaExtract, DP (units unlabeled), α-amylase, FAN, protein, turbidity, wort clarity and colorCSV
Hartwick 2019 Malt AnalysisThree production sorghum malts through a full brewing panel — the report behind the site's DP-below-20 founding numbersExtract, color, protein, S/T, FAN, DP, α-amylase, filtration, clarity, pHCSV
Midwest 2019 Grain NutritionThe same production malts through a feed-and-forage panel — composition, energy values, full mineralsProtein, fat, fiber, ash, TDN, energy values, seven mineralsCSV
Montana State 2019 Malt PanelThe third laboratory of March 2019 — a malt-quality panel whose coarse-grind extract basis makes it the working lesson in reading COA measure namesMoisture, extract (CGDB/FGDB), color, β-glucan, soluble proteinCSV
Bard's 2010 Malt AnalysisThe earliest malt-analysis sheet recovered from the Bard's archive — in-house tests beside R&D results, published verbatim with ambiguities markedFriability, extract, enzymes, protein, S/T, DON, sensory notesCSV
LCBO Beer CertificatesA provincial regulator's independent panels on finished Bard's Gold, 2017 and 2019Alcohol, ethyl carbamate, heavy metals, pesticide screenCSV
Production QA Log 2014–2017Four years of stage-by-stage batch records from flagship production — including 21 recorded gliadin-negative results and the high-gravity dilution visible in the gravitiesTurbidity, pH, color, BU, gravities, RDF, extract, calories, per-stageCSV
CSA/Bard's Consumer Survey 2015985 gluten-free consumers on gluten-reduced beer — the tabulated results, with the CSA's published figures and our recomputations side by sideReported reactions by severity and by liking, awareness at purchase, marketing acceptability, personal gluten thresholdsCSV

More datasets are in preparation from the same archive: the independent laboratory analysis of production sorghum malt, production malt QA lot records, finished-beer laboratory results, and the 2004 screening summary. Each will appear here as it clears review.

External research

The library also carries external work — datasets and papers published by others, mirrored or reviewed here when the license permits and the content matters to gluten-free brewing. External datasets keep their originating DOI as the record of authority; this site adds the brewing-side reading.

ItemWhat it isType

Open research asks

The library also publishes Research Asks — the open questions this site can't answer alone, written specifically enough for a homebrewer, brewery, or laboratory to pick one up. Hop varieties against sorghum malt, mash protocol comparisons, enzyme dose reduction, and a standing request for sorghum malt data from anywhere.

Proposed standards

The library also carries proposals — specific, criticizable drafts published so the field has something to react to:

  • Sorghum Malt Evaluation Standard (GFB-SME, draft v0.3) — evaluate sorghum malt as a character ingredient: an external-enzyme reference mash in place of the congress mash, turbidity and FAN as first-class measures, mandatory units declarations, and a defined sensory panel. Written for the gap the field has papered over with borrowed barley methods and South Africa's opaque-beer spec (SABS 235).
  • Truly Gluten-Free Standard (GFB-TGF, draft v0.1) — the product-class definition the category never wrote down: ingredient exclusion (no wheat, barley, rye, oats — ever), verified inputs, custody records, and pre-fermentation evidence with no-detected-gluten reporting.
  • Evaluation Methods: A Field Survey — every methodology the field has used on sorghum malt, each reviewed on its own page: SABS/SANS 235, the Novellie/CSIR foundations, barley-adapted methods, IoB/EBC, the Taylor/Pretoria research conventions, and commercial COA practice. The case file behind the proposal.

How this library works

  • Data pages are frozen records. Once published, a dataset changes only for corrections, and corrections are recorded.
  • Cite what you use. Every data page carries a ready-to-paste citation naming the originating laboratory and this site as published source. Our original datasets are archived on Zenodo with permanent DOIs as deposits complete — each data page states its own archive status — so the citation survives even if this site does not. Reuse-with-attribution here means what it means everywhere on this site: CC BY 4.0.
  • Context lives with the subject. The story of why a dataset matters — and how our flavor-first doctrine reads it — lives on the brewing side, linked from each data page.
  • If you build on this data, tell us. The contact page works; results that extend this record are exactly what this library exists for.
