Bard's Story

Bard's was proof. Gluten-free beer did not have to be a pity product, a syrup workaround, or a thin apology in a bottle.

Bard's did not appear in a healthy gluten-free beer category. There basically was no category. If you had celiac disease and loved beer, the message from the market was basically: sorry, you are out.

We founded Bard's to prove gluten-free beer could be real beer.

The breakthrough was not a branding trick. It was the decision to take gluten-free brewing seriously enough to solve the malt and process problem. Malted sorghum mattered because it gave the beer a grain foundation. Gluten-free malt mattered because beer needs more than fermentable sugar. Process mattered because a good idea still has to survive the brewhouse.

Bard's was not perfect, and the point of this section is not nostalgia. The point is what the work proved and what it taught.

Gluten Free Brewer exists because that knowledge is worth preserving, organizing, and sharing. Bard's was the proof. This site is the follow-through.

The Through Line

The old standard was workaround beer.

Bard's proved that standard was wrong.

Real gluten-free beer needs a real grain decision, a real malt decision, a real process, and a real quality system. That is why this story belongs inside a technical knowledge base instead of sitting off to the side as founder lore.
